HISTORY / BACKGROUND:
Along with the Colt Model 609, the Colt Model 610 was the first Colt Carbine to see wide scale
production and use by US Military Forces. The Colt Model 610 entered US Military Service with the US
Air Force and was given the designation of XM177. The primary difference between the Model 609 and
610 was the presence of a Forward Assist on the 609 and the lack of a Forward Assist on the 610. The
Colt Model 610 was also later given the USAF designation of GAU-5A.
