Below are Retro Black Rifles "In The Field" with the US Air Force
June 1999 - Airman Alfred, from the 47th Security
Forces, patrols the flightline at Davis Mothan Air
Force Base, Arizona, during Roving Sands '99.
Her rifle is a
Colt Model 602. The rifle still
retains it's original 3-Prong Flashider.
Sept 1980 - A Security Forces Airman takes up a position during
Reforger '80. She is equipped with a
Colt Model 604 / USAF M16.
March 1981- An 8th Security Police Squadron member
wearing chemical warfare gear during exercise Team
Spirit '81. He is armed with a
Colt Model 604 / USAF M16.
July 1984 - Staff Sergeant Maxim of the 30th Security Police Squadron
draws down on an aggressor during a drill. His rifle is a
Colt Model
604 / USAF M16.
April 1985 - A crew member stands guard in front of an HH-3
Jolly Green helicopter during Exercise SOLID SHIELD 85. His
weapon appears to be a
Colt Model 653. It is known that the   
US Air Force did have a limited number of Colt Model 653 in
inventory, but the exact USAF designation for them is not clear.
April 2005 - Senior Airman Solon, 99th Civil Engineering
Squadron Explosive Ordinance Disposal, fires at opposing
force during bivouac training exercise at Camp Cobra. His
weapon is a classic examples of an
Air Force GUU-5P.
June 1979 - A member of a combat control team
sets marker panels around a drop zone while
competing in Exercise VOLANT RODEO '79. He is
equipped with a
Colt Model 649 / USAF GAU-5A/A.
July 1988 - An Air Force combat control team works at the end of the runway as a C-130 Hercules aircraft
comes in for a landing during a joint Army Reserve/Air Force Reserve medical exercise. The team is made
up of students from the Combat Control Pararescue Indoctrination School at Lackland Air Force Base (AFB),
Texas, and members of the 1722nd Combat Control Squadron from Dyess AFB, Texas. The Carbines in use
by the team are a
Colt Model 649 / USAF GAU-5A/A.
Sept 1994 - Senior Airman Koplis from the 6th Special
Security Police Squadron at MacDill AFB, Florida, provides
flightline security for the deploying C-130 aircraft in support
of forces in Haiti. His rifle is a "USAF Mixmaster", it has a
Colt Model 601 or 602 Lower, with a later Colt Model 604
Upper.
2005-2006 - Classic examples of an Air Force GUU-5P. These are former US Air Force M16's and Carbines
that have been rebuilt/upgraded. These can be found with all 3 types of Lowers (Slabside, Partial Fence,
Full Fence) depending on which Model the original was built on. These will have an "A1" Slickside (no
Forward Assist) Upper. Some will retain the original 2-Position Aluminum Collapsing Buttstock, and some
will have an upgraded 2, 4, or 6-Position Plastic Buttstock. All of these will have a barrel upgrade, the
most common being a "M-4 Barrel" with a 1/7 Twist Rate. The Air Force are the "Masters of Rebuilding",
and it is not uncommon to find a 40 year old weapon that has been through multiple rebuilds/upgrades.
2005 - USAF Pararescueman works on a
"downed pilot" during a training exercise.
His weapon is another classic examples of
an
Air Force GUU-5P.
Dec 1994 - Security Forces patrol the flightline at Davis Mothan
Air Force Base, Arizona, during Roving Sands '99. The rifle
appears to be a
Colt Model 601, with a number of upgrades.
The original components of this rifle would have most likely
seen service in the Vietnam War.
Nov 1993 - TSgt. McDonald, Security Police Specialists assigned to
the 51st Security Police Squadron, takes cover during a drill on
the flightline. The rifle is a
Colt Model 602. At the very minimum
the barrel and charging handle has been upgraded.

Dec 1991 - US Air Force Security Policemen,
armed with
Colt Model 602 rifles, take up
perimeter guard position at Osan AFB
during Foul Eagle.
April 1999, Indian Springs Air Field, Nevada, - A Senior Airman from the
169th Security Police Squadron, SC Air National Guard, defends his
position during an exercise. He is equipped with a
Colt Model 604 /
USAF M16 that has been upgraded with a new barrel and handguards.
June 1986 - Sgt. Susan M. Cline, 833rd Security Police
Squadron, combat arms training and maintenance specialist,
uses a training aid to demonstrate the catch bolt movement
when loading an M-16 rifle.
June 1986, Holloman AFB, NM - Airman Johnson, 833rd Security
Police Squadron, combat arms training and maintenance
specialist, demonstrates steady rifle technique for the M-16
rifle. He is using a
Colt Model 604 / USAF M16.
Jan 1984, Little Rock AFB, AR - An airman participates
in Exercise VOLANT SCORPION. He is equiped with a
Colt Model 604 / USAF M16, and a M203 40mm
Grenade Launcher.
March 2004, Mildenhall, England - a member of the
USAF 100th Security Forces Squadron  Tactics Team
participates in a Close Quarters Battle (CQB)
training exercise. He is equipped with a
GUU-5P.  
March 1982 - A Security Forces Airman stands guard
during an exercise. He is equipped with a
Colt Model
602. The rifle still appears to be in an unaltered / as
issued state.
1983 Malmstrom AFB, MT- A Staff Sergeant participates in a
security exercise in which terrorists are trying to hijack a missile
convoy. He is equipped with a
Colt Model 604 / USAF M16.
Oct 1982 - Two airmen receive instructions from a
controller while defending the air base during Exercise
Reforger '81. They are carrying
Colt Model 604 / USAF
M16, and the Airman to the left/rear has a XM148 40mm
Grenade Launcher attached to his rifle.
March 1989, Eielson AFB, AK - SGT Reichardt,
91st Missile Security Squadron, guards a KC-135
Stratofortress aircraft during the Strategic Air
Command exercise Giant Warrior '89. His rifle is
a
Colt Model 604 / USAF M16.
June 1990, Camp Swift, TX - Master Sergeant Buethie explains the
operation of an M203 grenade launcher to Staff Sergeant Keene
during exercise PATRIOT WARRIOR. The rifle is a
Colt Model 604 /
USAF M16, and it still retains it's original 3-Prong Flashider.
Jan 1978, Niagra Fall AFB, NY - A security
policeman guarding a F-101 Voodoo. He
is equipped with a
Colt Model 602 which
appears to be all original.
May 1978 - Members of the 81st Security Police Squadron demonstrated the four
firing positions to be used during the US Air Force Europe Marksmanship Matches
at Torrejon Air Base, Spain. They appear to be using
Colt Model 604 / USAF M16.
July 1988, Camp Bullis TX - Airman Farmer, a student from the
CCT School at Lackland AFB, TX, watches the runway during a
joint Army Reserve/Air Force Reserve medical exercise. He is
equipped with a
Colt Model 649 / USAF GAU-5A/A which has
had the 4.5" Moderator replaced with a Birdcage Flashider.
